Macbook One / Kenny Zero
I got my work Macbook finally. I’ve been waiting nearly nine months and managed to talk the IT group into bumping me up in the queue since I was still on my four year old Dell laptop. I spent most of yesterday doing configuration stuff, installing basic software (QuickSilver!) and doing the horrible task of transferring all my e-mail. (I use lots of PST files in Outlook and there is no “import” to entourage) I get all done and come in this morning after doing a reboot and find that everything is basically hosed. Entourage lost all my converted e-mail, I can’t login to the corpnet and feel basically screwed.
I finally figured out what I did wrong, well actually two things. We still tie the Macs to Active Directory for some reason and there is domain policy to “encrypt” peoples “documents” folders on the PC’s. This works fine on the PC’s, but apparently it totally hoses the macs. So it encrypted my Documents directory and made it unaccessible, which caused Entourage to freak out and it all went down hill from there.
Since I had only a days worth of effort into this, I decided to take the easy route out. I flatten the box and re-installed from the network image. Started the whole process over again. By the time I left, I still didn’t have wireless working, but almost everything else was there.
