Went to Fry’s today to get a replacement IDE drive for the server and discovered that they no longer carry them. It is SATA or nothing now in the raw drive department.
I find one on Newegg for $40, it was twice the size of the one I killed and one of the good Seagate types. It’ll be here Wednesday hopefully…..
I bought some new light fixtures today for the downstairs basement/family room. There were these horrible 1970’s hanging things with the chains running across the ceiling in there, one of which had already died a while ago. We have been trying to get Isaac to spend more time down there, because all of his bigger toys are there and it just makes things easier. Well he hates it and we finally clued in that it was probably because it was just dark.
So today I spent $100 at Loews and bought some new light fixtures. So what does this have to-do with killing a drive? Well I managed to turn off the wrong circuit and killed my office rather then the family room. Oops.
I was a little annoyed that the drive died until I yanked it out and realized it was over five years old now and was only a 80G drive. Five years on a drive running 24/7 isn’t so bad and it was one of the crappy Maxtor’s. The good news was that I ran my weekly full backups early this week and have a complete clone of the drive as of late Thursday night. The drive just holds “shared” stuff, things like music archives, movies and TV shows. Nothing which is updated more then once every couple weeks really. So I just need to purchase a new drive and drop it in.
The biggest problem will be finding a IDE drive, since this box doesn’t have SATA. I don’t want to deal with adding a add-in SATA card and figuring out how to get Ubuntu to talk to it. Hopefully Fry’s will still have something available.
So the big question is why didn’t the UPS kick in and save the box? That is a very good question and it appears that the UPS died a while ago and I forgot to replace it. So tomorrow it is HD replacement and new UPS for the server box.

On Tuesday last week I walked to get a sandwich with a couple people from my team and my left jaw started hurting. When I tried to eat my sandwich, it went from annoying pain to STOP IT NOW type pain. I had developed a ping ball size swelling around the back of my left jaw and it hurt.
So I went to the doctor the next day, because it was not getting any better and she wasn’t so sure what it was either. So I got my very first cat scan, which is another whole story I should tell. (Do you think it should take them six tries to get the IV in for the contrasting agent?) Anyhow, I got see the doctor yesterday to find out what is up and she tells me there is good news and bad news.

The good news is the lymph node and thyroid are both fine. The bad news is that I have a 1mm stone in my left parotid calculus. (No, I’m not making that up) I guess this is another gland in that general area and this little stone has widge in there and caused an infection. It is the type of stone that just forms inside you, not something from the outside.

So then it gets interesting, because obviously I need the thing removed. So I ask her how you get it out and says she isn’t sure. Not the words you want to here from your doctor. So Monday I have another appointment with a ENT specialist and I guess they have magic methods for removing things in and around your head. I have a horrible feeling this is going to require more needles and sharp tools and blood.
So I’m popping horse pill size anti-botics and eating Advil like jelly beans. The swelling is down today, so unless I eat, it isn’t throbing. Still kind of annoying.

Anybody got an ark they are looking to get rid?
I have basically worked the entire weekend. I got paged all Friday night and most of Saturday morning. When I wasn’t dealing with pages, I was writing/working on this stupid review document. I got to spend some time with Rosie and Isaac, but have got zero downtime. I’m going to be pretty grumpy next week and it is going to be busy week.
I am starting to feel ill, I suspect I’ll come down with something horrible by Thursday.
