Sad state of affairs
My work laptop is a Dell something, with a P4 processor and 2G of RAM with Windows XP. I’ve now had it over three years and in that time it has never been wiped or otherwise “cleaned up”. What this means is that the bit rot is getting pretty bad, how bad you ask? It is now easier for me to use OWA to get my e-mail then to launch Outlook 2003. (I’ve so far held off the upgrade to Office 2007) I only partly know what is wrong, I haven’t figured out yet what I can actually do to fix it. When I have Outlook running, one of the svchost.exe goes crazy and starts sucking up RAM and taking over the box. (This afternoon I noticed it was up to 1G of RAM)
I’d have to install a bunch of debugger tools to even get to the point of peaking into svchost and figuring out what actual service is going nuts. Flattening the box is really not an option, without a great deal of pain. At this point I’ve decided to just suck it up and wait for my Mac to be issued. Even with the pain of going to Office 2007 for the Mac, it can’t be as bad as this thing.
