My work laptop is a Dell something, with a P4 processor and 2G of RAM with Windows XP. I’ve now had it over three years and in that time it has never been wiped or otherwise “cleaned up”. What this means is that the bit rot is getting pretty bad, how bad you ask? It is now easier for me to use OWA to get my e-mail then to launch Outlook 2003. (I’ve so far held off the upgrade to Office 2007) I only partly know what is wrong, I haven’t figured out yet what I can actually do to fix it. When I have Outlook running, one of the svchost.exe goes crazy and starts sucking up RAM and taking over the box. (This afternoon I noticed it was up to 1G of RAM)
I’d have to install a bunch of debugger tools to even get to the point of peaking into svchost and figuring out what actual service is going nuts. Flattening the box is really not an option, without a great deal of pain. At this point I’ve decided to just suck it up and wait for my Mac to be issued. Even with the pain of going to Office 2007 for the Mac, it can’t be as bad as this thing.

I have been on a roll today.
The cloths dryer has had a shelf loose for a while, today it was at the point where it was going to fall off if I didn’t fix it. Getting a cloths dryer apart is actually more difficult then you would think, I had to actually look how via Google. (the fact that I found dozens of similar questions suggested to me I am not alone in having trouble figuring this out.) But I was successful, once you got into the dryer, it was nothing to tighten the the shelf. Dryer fixed.
I had started the morning by taking apart our AppleTV for a hard-drive update. We hit the point where Isaac had so many movies on it, that there wasn’t much room left over for anything else. So last week I ordered a 230GB drive to replace the 40GB that it came with. Pulling the AppleTV part was pretty easy actually, lots of pictures and how-to sites on the web. I already had the laptop IDE to USB adaptor piece, so I cloned the original drive onto the new drive and then used some command line magic to grow the “media” partition where all the movies, tv shows, music, pictures, etc lives. The first time I did this, the AppleTV was having problems booting, but I think I figured out what I did wrong. One of the sites said to delete the Spotlight directories, so I did. But none of the other sites said to-do it, so re-cloned the drive and left the spotlight directories alone. Then AppleTV came up fine, I told it to-do a factory restore and it is now sucking down 40GB of media from my mac.
I also finally got the molding in our bedroom attached to the wall. I had cut and painted the pieces which went around the closet, but never actually attached them. (cutting molding for outside corners sucks and I probably just didn’t feel like finishing it) So this morning I got my nail gun out and attached everything. I was getting tired of them falling down all the time. Once the wood putty dries, they’ll be done.
