Running to get pork fried rice and hot&sour soup for dinner…
My WRT54G got Tomato-ized last week – I wanted a way to track my bandwidth usage with the upcoming Comcast lock down and that seemed like the easy way to get it. I’m impressed with the firmware/image. It isn’t quite as “pretty” as the default Linksys stuff, but it sure has a ton of features and really isn’t all that more difficult to setup.
Last night I got roped into helping a friend clean the bottom of his boat. It was fun to get in the water after nearly a year of being dry. The marina wasn’t to icky either, which is nice. I’m always amazed at the stuff that grows on the bottom of boats. The funny thing was Isaac hosing me down after I got out. Pictures are here.
Next weekend is the big antenna party and I’m not ready yet. I’m still having problems getting the antenna to fit the measurements in the instructions. Basically the sum of the parts is not matching what it should, even though all the parts are right. I’ve been working on it in between mowing the lawn. (Since I’m having to move the antenna to get the back yard mowed.) I’m also sweating like a pig out there, so I have to keep running in for water breaks.
Just a quick plug for iTunes 8. I’m loving the Genius feature….

Weather is perfect & I’m off to work – something is wrong with that
It was nice to see Dennis finally made a couple posts and I some how missed a bunch of Kelly’s. Things have just not been so great at work the last couple weeks. Last week was really bad since I was primary night time oncall. I didn’t get woke up exactly one out of seven nights. I think last night was the worst, I got paged at 2am, 4:30am and again at 7am. I finally just gave up, put the tickets in pending and said I was driving into work. I wondered around like a zombie all day and left at 4pm. I didn’t take a nap, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to go to sleep tonight and not have one of those over tired cycles.
This weekend was the yearly NWAPRS summer gathering. This is another ham radio thing, but one that I didn’t have to organize or do anything but show up for. It was a little sad actually, because the thing is dying a slow death. There was probably a 1/4 of the people there that attended just three years ago. The talks were starting to be re-runs of stuff done at other places and all the other signs of a thing dying. The good news is that I got to sit and talk with a couple people I don’t see often. I got some software problems solved by the actual developers and otherwise had a nice time.
Sunday was a Isaac and Daddy day. Rosie is still doing hikes on the weekend, so it was just us boys for the day. We rode bikes, had Subway for lunch and spent a bunch of time playing with his GeoTraks trains. I can’t believe his 3rd birthday is coming up in a couple weeks. I’m quite proud of myself, I already got all his b-day presents, all but one has showed up from Amazon even. The best thing is that we watched the original Star Wars Sunday morning. Isaac found my R2-D2 and CP30 action figures and spent all day Saturday playing with them, so Sunday I got the DVD out and sat and watched it with him. He is only good for about 45 minutes at a time, but we managed to watched the whole thing on Sunday. I sat with him and explained the parts he really didn’t get, I hope I didn’t scar him for life with the more violent parts.
As I’m looking at the picture in this article, I get all warm and fuzzy feeling. A brand new prototype sitting among all the raw materals and casts off from which it came.
Summer ended with a pretty nice day. We drove to the pass and did a short hike with Isaac, which he really enjoyed. He is getting much better at hiking, we didn’t have to carry him once today and he really did well climbing over the wet rocks. I still think we should get him a little wetsuit for when he gets close to water, but maybe next year. I posted the pictures already, a couple got messed up with the sun and Rosie seems to have her eyes closed in about half of them.
When we got home I took a nap and then did a little house cleaning while Isaac and Rosie had a play date with one of Rosie’s friends from MSFT. The kids rode their bikes to the park and played. I almost finished balancing the books and discovered Uncle Sam had finally dropped our rebate check into my account. Time to go put little man to bed….
I found this quote in an online interview of Charles Stross, I love it….
“I wrote “Lobsters” and showed it to a friend. He said, “that’s really cool, but you’ll never sell it–the audience would have to overdose on Slashdot for six months before they got it.” He was completely right–he just underestimated the number of people out there who overdose on Slashdot!”
