Almost to Crater Lake – big bunch of nothing out here!!!
Picked up a book on Xen yesterday at Powell’s in Portland and read about half of it. I’m looking forward to playing when I get home….
Currently exacting pics and other data files from my niece’s VERY infected laptop. Up next, flattening and anti-virus software…..
Had breakfast at WholeFoods and then wondered around Powells Tech bookstore while family went shopping else where. Now we checkout and go S.
Today marks the beginning of a week long road trip for the Richards clan. Rosie and I decided late last week that we’d cut the normal day long trip to my parents in half and spend a night in Portland. We both enjoy Portland and after having lived here for almost four years I sometimes wonder why we don’t move here. For me a trip to Portland means a stop at Powell’s bookstore, having a Ruby at McMenamins and picking up some supplies at HRO. Since Rosie also had some stores she loves to stop at here in the Pearl district, I hit Priceline for someplace to stay yesterday.
I choose a the Mark Spencer Hotel, which is just a couple blocks from Powell’s. It is a really interesting hotel. It is very nice, but not a ultra fancy high end place. It was build in 1907 and I guess was designed for people who needed a ‘home away from home’, which explains the small kitchen in the rooms. I’d try to grab some pictures of the room, but it such a odd shape and layout, that I don’t think I could really capture it. Other then the scary small/loud elevators, I like it and will consider coming back.
After getting into town and unloading the truck, we walked down the street to a local McMenamins for dinner. This wasn’t one of the normal pubs, instead they had a bunch of fancier type dishes on the menu. (Well, they still had grilled cheese for Isaac) I had a pork chop dish with a apple sauce like mash potato side and Rosie got a salad of some kind. I think she made a mistake, because the salad was tiny and must have been designed for a side dish.
After dinner we walked to Powell’s and I guided Rosie and Isaac to the kids section. Rosie said I could wonder back to the Science Fiction section and she’d text me when they were ready. At this point I have almost stopped buying any fiction in normal paper book format, instead reading everything on my Kindle or iPhone. But I came across a book that I’d never heard of and picked it up for old time sake. It is called Echelon and is obviously based on the NSA program by the same name. I’m just about finished with my current Kindle based book, so I’ll read it next.
Following our trip through Powell’s (no stop by the technical book store, hoping to swing by it tomorrow morning), we walked over to the Whole Foods that is around the corner. Rosie got something more to eat, since her salad was so small and I got Isaac some bubble bath, since we forgot it. I really do like Whole Food, I actually park under one in Seattle and walk the 1/2 mile to my office. We’ll probably go back there for breakfast.
Tomorrow we’ll spend the morning shopping a little more and hopefully take off for my parents by lunch time. I actually have a shopping list for HRO, but my stops there are always a quick in and out. (The last couple times I have called ahead, so they would have my order all ready to go) I actually hate going to HRO due to the location of it here in Portland. It is located in one of those spots that you can get to fine from I-5, but getting back can be REALLY nasty due to the street layout and traffic. I’ll be picking up another dual band base antenna which will ultimately be for the homebrew/laundryroom based/D-Star repeater.
Made it to Portland and our retro hotel in the Pearl district. Now enjoying a Ruby at McMenamins down the street…
So heading to Portland this afternoon and making visit to Powells, REI, McMinnamems and HRO. Sometimes wonder why we don’t live in Portland.
Getting ready for the trip south, so Isaac gets a week with Grandparents. I think hitting the AMZN company picnic has already been tossed.
My cablemdm was offline last night when we got home. Know why? Because Comcast hooked up a neighbor and disconnected me…..
