Trying to not be late for Princess and the Frog movie…
I’m about 50% over the ick that took me out the last two days. I still managed to make it all day @ work. Now I just need some more sleep…
A couple months ago I had to-do something which required powering down my home server. (I don’t even remember what it was now) It had been running for almost a year without being rebooted and probably even longer without being power cycled. As it goes with older hardware which isn’t turned off very often, it didn’t want to be turned back on again. I freaked out for a couple minutes, then left it sitting for few more minutes and then walked through some simple debugging steps. (Unplug everything, kick it a few times, etc) This eventually got it working again, at which point I did two things; 1) I did a manual backup of the entire box and 2) started shopping for a new server.
At some point this last summer I got it into my head that I wanted a ‘real’ server for home. By ‘real’ server, I mean one in a rack. This meant I needed to buy a rack and get a rack mounted case. During one of my stops at the local PC recycle place, I noticed they had a huge pile of rack mount cases for really cheap. So I picked one up for $10. So with this recycled case, I started building out my new server. I ordered the whole thing on Amazon for about $300, not counting the drives. I went with a semi-nice motherboard, a AMD64 something processor and a couple 2G sticks of RAM. The most expensive piece was the power supply, but I figured it was important to splurge here. (I’m sure my old server issues are rooted in the cheap power supply)
Fast forward to about two weeks ago and I finally had time to start building the new monster. It actually was pretty easy to put together. The rack case is nice and big compared to the current motherboard. At the time I started putting it together I hadn’t actually got a HD for it yet. My first power on test was with no drives and I was happy/surprised that it powered up the first time with no problems.
The next day Isaac and I made a trip to the “Daddy Toy Store”, I guess the rest of the world calls it Fry’s. (Yes, there is a Isaac toy store and a Daddy toy store) I picked up a 1TB SATA drive and remembered that I didn’t have any extra CDROM’s, so we went looking for them. About half way across the computer section, it occurred to me that maybe I didn’t need to buy another CDROM. The only software you really install via CDROM is the OS and now you can boot from a USB stick. Basically I had one of those “doh!” moments, I’m wondering why this never occurred to me before? (creating the bootable USB stick from the standard Ubuntu distro was super simple)
So fast forward another couple weeks and the new box is almost ready for production use. I have successfully brought it up with the latest and greatest Ubuntu. All the required software is installed and I’ve moved my personal home directory over to it. This evening I got the blog move, so this site is actually being hosted on the new box now. There are still some things left to-do, but they are pretty straight forward. I need to finish configuring samba, move the music/movies/tv shows share over and then move Rosie’s home directory over.
I can already see the big improvement in speed. The drive system is faster, the processor is really really faster and this box has 1G ethernet, so it is blinding quick when talking to my mac desktop.
@wa7nwp sigh, doesn’t open until next weekend….
@wa7nwp that is the plan! ;-)
Pretty! http://yfrog.com/3gt3lej
We got the Christmas tree up this morning and stockings will soon follow. Plus Rosie & I have date afternoon today!
Stop number 2 and I still can’t find the #hamradio issue of Linux Journal. Where is it already?
Looking forward to the #hamradio breakfast tomorrow with the #wetnet crowd. I’m going to try and get rid of some old tech laying around.
