Upgrading my main desktop mac to Snow Leopard finally, been a long and weird weekend. Figure I lost 8 hrs to work due to being oncall.
It is certainly fall. We have been getting quite a bit of rain the last couple days, this morning it was raining so hard it looked like a wall of water coming out of the sky. (It was splashing gunk out of my gutters and all over the car it was coming down so bad) But otherwise it was a productive day, even though I spent way more time dealing with oncall then I should have been.
Small rant about work. Somehow my team has become the ‘tech support’ of the group, so even when something has NOTHING to-do with our stuff, we are getting dragged in. I spent something like three hours today (including getting paged at 3am) trying to figure out why someone elses team app was slow. The app doesn’t run on any of our services, doesn’t have us as a dependency and nothing of ours was slow. But he keep paging me and our secondary. Butthead!
So between the pages, I took Isaac to Denny’s with the plan to take him with me to work. I decided to go in this weekend and move myself from a cube into my new office. (first one since coming to Amazon) I have to share the office with our lead SDE, but I’m really looking forward to being able to shut the door part of the time. I’ve hit that spot where I’m now the person everybody comes to for their questions. It makes it very difficult to get any real work done, so I’m hoping the separation will help.
I’m trying to catch up on my RSS feeds tonight and came across this cool link. It is eight cool places for geeks that you can visit via Google Earth. Very cool site, although I realized that I have only been to two of them personally.
Tomorrow I’m hoping the rain storms will let up enough so I can climb the tower and pull down the rotator control cable. I have tended plans to replace the rotator next week, but that means replacing the cable connector and I’d like to have it done ahead of time. (Including testing the rotator itself.) Should be easy if it will stop raining long enough for me to get up on the tower.
I got my Macbook upgrade this morning to Snow Leopard. I did the whole cycle, backup and upgrade in place to make sure everything is good and then did a nuke from space, re-install and then suck in my old settings. It actually takes quite a while to-do it that way. Next is my desktop and I’m not looking forward to it.
The biggest annoying thing so far is that it kind of hosed my ruby on rails install. I didn’t have anything to incredible there, but I had to jump through some hoops to wire back up the sqlite3 db I used when developing stuff. Luckily the gem stuff worked, so I was able to leverage it to re-install everything.
I also updated WordPress, hence why I’m writing something. I guess there is a internet worm making the rounds which can take over un-patched installations. I don’t have ftp running on my server, so none of the automatic upgrade stuff works, so I have to-do everything manually. I am pretty stupid, because I’ve yet to write down how to-do it, so every time I have to work through the instructions. I should just script the whole thing, it is pretty simple.
Tomorrow is a Isaac and Daddy day, Rosie is going hiking on the east side of the mountain. We are going to go swimming at the Y in the morning and then move my desk at work. I’m moving into an office and thought it would be fun for Isaac to help me. (I know it sounds horrible, but he loves this kind of thing.)
Home from lunch with the family that included trip to REI and short hike. I believe a nap is in my future.
Lunch with family at BurgerMaster – Yummy!
Flattening first mac for upgrade to Snow Leopard, did upgrade in place and seemed to be OK.
Finally leaving work, long long week and it isn’t over. Still need to push some stuff to production after 8pm. Now off to swim…
Don’t all kids declare themselves done with diapers on their second birthday and that is it?
Just got back from first parent nite thing at Isaac’s school. Felt bad listening to all the potty training horror stories.
